Is it beneficial to take a multivitamin everyday? What are some facts about multivitamins?

According to the British Journal of Nutrition there has been a series of studies  of the effects of multivitamin supplements on mood and cognitive function.

Healthy men, women and children, taking commercially available vitamins and mineral supplements, were monitored for 4 to 12 weeks.  Their cognitive performance through tasks requiring memory, attention, accuracy and/or multitasking were tested.

Their finding indicates that vitamin and mineral supplementation improved cognitive performance after only a few weeks.

High doses of B-complex showed men improved their performance with cognitive tasks. Women taking multivitamin/mineral supplements had increased accuracy and speed with multitasking. There was an increased accuracy in attention-based activities in children ages 8 to 14.

This article below really tells us the facts about multivitamins. It is true that supplementing with just one vitamin or mineral, when we really do not know which we are truly lacking ,is not helpful.  Where as a multivitamin covers all the bases.

Multivitamin supplements boost brain function, say UK researchers.

I find in my life taking a  multivimamin is beneficial. I feel more alert, have better energy, and just feel healthier all around. The facts are that multivitamins are good for me!

I have an Ant family living on my step.

They are a friendly bunch; always coming to say Hi and wanting to munch.

When I sit on my step junior and shelly come to play they start at my toes and climb along way.

They spend their summer gathering and storing the things they will need to get through the winter.

But one day Junior wandered away, and mom and dad said Sally you must find our dear dear junior.

And off they sent her. Now what I need from you dear reader is some help.

Because since Junior wandered away my days have not been the same.

My little ants no longer come to play.

I miss their little game.

So please keep an eye out for my little friend

and if you

do see him

stick out your toe

and let him

climb to the end.

I started this blog because I was receiving constant questions about the ingredients in the Reliv products I sell. Things like “I read you can get too much vitamin ***. There seems to be too much in your product.” or ” I heard that **** can cause cancer.” or “Don’t you think ***** will do the same thing and it’s cheaper?” On and on it goes. In today’s world everyone has their own education on the things they want to do and use. With the internet and television we have the opportunity to learn new things everyday. We also have the opportunity to help others learn. Therefore with this blog I am learning great things about the products I sell and hopefully helping others to learn also.

I have discovered that there are a lot of great supplements out there. From my research I have not found one that is as complete as Reliv. The Reliv “NOW” and CLASSIC” are stand on their own products, which deliver complete nutrition when taken as directed. Our bodies need complete nutrition to help to stay on our ‘feet’. excuse the pun 😉 . Reliv gives you that complete nutrition. They have blended the nutrients synergistic so that each vitamin and nutrient has the helper vitamins/nutrients it needs to help them do their jobs as they are ment to do.
With the addition of LunaRich to the Now and Soy Sentails, they have only made great products even better. Today they announced the third product to receive the LunaRich “Kids Now” What a wonderful advance!

Whats in Pro Vantage

What is in Pro Vantage and is it safe? This is what I will be looking at in this blog. I am searching the ingredients list on the package. First on the list is Tonalin(conjugated linoleic acid{CLA})which is made from safflower oil. Next is Phosphatidylserine which is a phospholipid component, usually kept on the inner-leaflet (the cytosolic side) of cell membranes  an enzyme called flippase. Third is Creatine Monohydrate is a nitrogenous organic acid that occurs naturally in vertebrates. Extensive research over the last decade has shown that oral creatine supplementation at a rate of 5 to 20 grams per day appears to be very safe. Fourth on the list is Medium Chain Triglycerides. Some studies have shown that MCTs can help in the process of excess calorie burning, and thus weight loss. Next is Bioperine® (Piper nigrum) a standardized extract from the fruit of Piper nigrum L (black pepper) or Piper longum L (long pepper). Following we find Extract of grape seed (Vitis vinifera) There may be health benefits from the oil itself. Next we see  Alpha-Lipoic Acid an organosulfur compound derived from octanoic acid.  Then there is  Coenzyme Q 10  which helps to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system and more. Finally L-Carnitine is required for the transport of fatty acids from the cytosol into the mitochondria during the breakdown of lipids (fats) for the generation of metabolic energy.

First we will take a look at Tonalin® (Conjugated linoleic acid {CLA})

Tonalin® Brand CLA is made from Safflower Oil.  Using Tonalin CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) is great for weight loss, and can help if you have Diabetes, Cancer, and even  Atherosclerosis.  Tonalin® €LA is a safe, scientifically proven, effective nutritional supplement that contains no stimulants of any kind. However There are concerns that  CLA supplements by extremely overweight people may tend to cause or to aggravate insulin resistance, which may increase their risk of developing diabetes.  The general consensus is that the use of this supplement should be carefully examined if the person using the supplement is greatly overweight.

Phosphatidylserine– 

 (abbreviated Ptd-L-Ser or PS) is a phospholipid component of cell membranes. When a cell undergoes apoptosis, phosphatidylserine is no longer restricted to the cytosolic part of the membrane, but becomes exposed on the surface of the cell. Possible Health benefits: Memory and cognition-Commercially available products are made from soybeans. FDA did, however give “qualified health claim” status to phosphatidylserine, stating that, “Consumption of phosphatidylserine may reduce the risk of dementia in the elderly” and “Consumption of phosphatidylserine may reduce the risk of cognitive dysfunction in the elderly.”  Sports nutrition- Soy-PS, in a dose dependent manner (400 mg), has been reported to be an effective supplement for combating exercise-induced stress by blunting the exercise-induced increase in cortisol levels.PS supplementation promotes a desirable hormonal balance for athletes and might attenuate the physiological deterioration that accompanies overtraining and/or overstretching. In recent studies, PS has been shown to enhance mood in a cohort of young people during mental stress and to improve accuracy during tee-off by increasing the stress resistance of golfers.   Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder-First pilot studies indicate that PS supplementation might be beneficial for children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.  Safety-  Soy-derived PS is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) and is a safe nutritional supplement for older persons if taken up to a dosage of 200 mg three times daily. Phosphatidylserine has been shown to reduce specific immune response in mice.

Phosphatidylcholine

They are a major component of biological membranes and can be easily obtained from a variety of readily available sources such as egg yolk or soy beans from which they are mechanically extracted or chemically extracted using hexane. They are also a member of the lecithin group of yellow-brownish fatty substances occurring in animal and plant tissues.

Possible health benefits

Senescence:Phosphatidylcholine is a vital substance that is in every cell in the human body. Thus some researchers have used mutant mouse models with severe oxidative damage as a model of “accelerated aging” to investigate the possible role of phosphatidylcholine supplementation as a way of slowing down aging-related processes.  and improving brain functioning and memory capacity in dementia.However, a systematic review of clinical trials in humans found that lecithin or phosphatidylcholine supplementation does not benefit patients with dementia.

Liver repair:Recent studies point to the many potential benefits of phosphatidylcholine for liver repair. One study shows phosphatidylcholine’s healing effect with hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Phosphatidylcholine administration for chronic, active hepatitis resulted in significant reduction of disease activity in mice.

Lipolysis: Some organizations promote the use of injected phosphatidylcholine, otherwise known as injection lipolysis, claiming the procedure can break down fat cells, and thus serve as an alternative to liposuction. It is important to note that while the procedure cites early experiments that showed lipolysis in cases of fat emboli, no peer-reviewed studies have shown any amount of lipolysis even remotely comparable to liposuction.

Ulcerative colitis: Phase IIa/b clinical trials performed at the Heidelberg University Hospital have shown that delayed release phosphatidylcholine is an anti-inflammatory, and secondly, is a surface hydrophobicity increasing compound with promising therapeutic potential in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

In addition to the increased caloric burden of a diet rich in fats like phosphatidylcholine, a recent report has linked the microbial catabolites of phosphatidylcholine with increased atherosclerosis through the production of choline, trimethylamine oxide, and betaine. However, the validity of this study is disputed because the form of choline used was contaminated with trimethylamine oxide (TMAO). A 1999 study by other authors who studied 46 different foods did not find choline-rich foods to cause TMAO production.

Creatine Monohydrate  is a nitrogenous organic acid that occurs naturally in vertebrates and helps to supply energy to all cells in the body, primarily muscle. Creatine supplements are used by athletes, bodybuilders, wrestlers, sprinters, and others who wish to gain muscle mass. While there was once some concern that creatine supplementation could affect hydration status and heat tolerance and lead to muscle cramping and diarrhea, recent studies have shown these concerns to be unfounded.

Extensive research over the last decade has shown that oral creatine supplementation at a rate of 5 to 20 grams per day appears to be very safe and largely devoid of adverse side-effects,while at the same time effectively improving the physiological response to resistance exercise, increasing the maximal force production of muscles in both men and women.

The Mayo Clinic states that creatine has been associated with asthmatic symptoms and warns against consumption by persons with known allergies. Creatine cannot be recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to a lack of scientific information. Pasteurized cow’s milk contains higher levels of creatine than human milk.

Medium Chain Triglycerides– (MCTs) are medium-chain (6 to 12 carbons) fatty acid esters of glycerol. Some studies have shown that MCTs can help in the process of excess calorie burning, and thus weight loss. MCTs are also seen as promoting fat oxidation and reduced food intake. There has also been interest in MCTs from endurance athletes and the bodybuilding community. While there seem to be health benefits from MCTs, a link to improved exercise performance is weak.

Medium-chain triglycerides are generally considered a good biologically inert source of energy that the human body finds reasonably easy to metabolize. They have potentially beneficial attributes in protein metabolism but may be contraindicated in some situations due to their tendency to induce ketogenesis and metabolic acidosis. Their use is not recommended for diabetics unless under supervised medical treatment and those with liver problems due to the added stress they may put on the organ.

Bioperine® (Piper nigrum) –  BioPerine ® Is a standardized extract from the fruit of Piper nigrum L (black pepper) or Piper longum L (long pepper). Black Pepper Nature’s Bioavailability Enhancing Thermonutrient. Helps the body absorb  nutrients.

Extract of grape seed (Vitis vinifera)

Grape seed oil (also called grapeseed oil or grape oil) is technically a fruit oil, even though it is commonly referred to as a vegetable oil. It is pressed from the seeds of various varieties of Vitis vinifera grapes, an abundant by-product of winemaking. Potential medicinal benefits:  grape seeds contain antioxidants and other biologically active compounds,  A 1993 study supports the claim that grape seed oil increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C or “good cholesterol”) levels and reduces LDL levels.

alpha lipoic acid (ALA)

Lipoic acid (LA), also known as α-lipoic acid and alpha lipoic acid(ALA)  is an organosulfur compound derived from octanoic acid. LA contains two vicinal sulfur atoms (at C6 and C8) attached by a disulfide bond and is thus considered to be oxidized (although either sulfur atom can exist in higher oxidation states).

Clinical trials and approved uses

RLA is being used in a federally funded clinical trial for multiple sclerosis at Oregon Health and Science University.   R-lipoic acid (RLA) is currently being used in two federally funded clinical trials at Oregon State University to test its effects in preventing heart disease and atherosclerosis.   Alpha-lipoic acid is approved in Germany as a drug for the treatment of polyneuropathies, such as diabetic and alcoholic polyneuropathies, and liver disease. Coenzyme Q 10:

Heart health: Coenzyme Q10 helps to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.
 Migraine headaches:Supplementation of coenzyme Q10 has been found to have a beneficial effect on the condition of some sufferers of migraine headaches.
Cancer:CoQ10 is also being investigated as a treatment for cancer, and as relief from cancer treatment side-effects.
Cardiac arrest:Another recent study shows a survival benefit after cardiac arrest if coenzyme Q10 is administered in addition to commencing active cooling of the body to 90–93 degrees Fahrenheit (32–34 degrees Celsius).
Blood pressure:There are several reports concerning the effect of CoQ10 on blood pressure in human studies
Periodontal disease:Studies have shown that diseased gum tissue is deficient in CoQ10 compared to healthy gum tissue
Lifespan:One study demonstrated that low dosages of coenzyme Q10 reduce oxidation and DNA double-strand breaks, and a combination of a diet rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and coenzyme Q10 supplementation leads to a longer lifespan in rats.

Radiation injury: In 2002, a study reported that, in rat experiments, coenzyme Q10 taken as dietary supplement reduced radiation damage to the animals’ blood.

Parkinson’s disease: A 2002 study in 80 Parkinson’s disease patients found 1200 mg/day reduced the progression by 44%.[70][71] A phase III trial of 1200 mg/d and 2400 mg/d ran until August 2011. This study was terminated and the summary concluded: “The investigational drug is unlikely to demonstrate efficacy over placebo for this indication. However, no safety issues were discovered

Meat and fish are the richest source of dietary CoQ10 and levels over 50 mg/kg can be found in beef, pork and chicken heart, and chicken liver. Dairy products are much poorer sources of CoQ10 compared to animal tissues. Vegetable oils are also quite rich in CoQ10. Within vegetables, parsley, and perilla are the richest CoQ10 sources, but significant differences in their CoQ10 levels can be found in the literature. Broccoli, grape, and cauliflower are modest sources of CoQ10. Most fruit and berries represent a poor to very poor source of CoQ10, with the exception of avocado, with a relatively high CoQ10 content. According to the Mayo Clinic, “CoQ10 has been used, recommended, or studied for numerous conditions, but remains controversial as a treatment in many areas.”  Coenzyme Q-10, in its reduced form as solubilized ubiquinol, is approved for use as an orphan product in the treatment of Huntington’s disease and pediatric congestive heart failure; other uses are still unproven, including in the treatment of high triglycerides levels and athletic performance.

L-Carnitine

Carnitine is a quaternary ammonium compound biosynthesized from the amino acids lysine and methionine.    In living cells, it is required for the transport of fatty acids from the cytosol into the mitochondria during the breakdown of lipids (fats) for the generation of metabolic energy. It is widely available as a nutritional supplement. Carnitine was originally found as a growth factor for mealworms and labeled vitamin Bt. Carnitine exists in two stereoisomers: Its biologically active form is L-carnitine, whereas its enantiomer, D-carnitine, is biologically inactive.

Effects on bone mass: In the course of human aging, carnitine concentration in cells diminishes, affecting fatty acid metabolism in various tissues. Particularly adversely affected are bones, which require continuous reconstructive and metabolic functions of osteoblasts for maintenance of bone mass.

Antioxidant effects:The carnitines exert a substantial antioxidant action, thereby providing a protective effect against lipid peroxidation of phospholipid membranes and against oxidative stress induced at the myocardial and endothelial cell level,

Heart conditions:Carnitine is primarily used for heart-related conditions. Several clinical trials show that L-carnitine and propionyl-L-carnitine can be used along with conventional treatment for angina to reduce medication needs and improve the ability of those with angina to exercise without chest pain.There is little evidence about a positive effect of the use of carnitine after a heart attack. Some studies suggest people taking L-carnitine may be less likely to suffer a subsequent heart attack or experience chest pain and abnormal heart rhythms. However, other studies have not found similar benefits.Further research on this subject is needed.

Kidney disease and dialysis: Because kidneys produce carnitine, kidney disease may lead to the deficiency of carnitine in the body. Thus, carnitine may be prescribed to those with kidney disease.

Effect in male infertility:   The use of carnitine showed some promise in a controlled trial in selected cases of male infertility by improving sperm quality. L-Carnitine supplementation has also shown to have beneficial effects in the treatment of varicocele, a major cause of male infertility.

As a weight loss supplement:

“Although L-carnitine has been marketed as a weight-loss supplement, there is no scientific evidence to show that it improves weight loss; however, some studies show that oral carnitine reduces fat mass, increases muscle mass, and reduces fatigue. All of these effects may contribute to weight loss.” Furthermore, whereas researchers in the 20th century failed to show that muscle carnitine content could be increased by dietary supplementation, this may have been in part due to inadequate lengths of the supplementation periods.In 2011, researchers using L-carnitine L-tartrate supplementation for six months in a well-controlled study demonstrated not only increased muscle carnitine in subjects without carnitine deficiencies, but also an impact on muscle metabolism and performance; however, measurements of lipid oxidation were not taken in this study, and further research is needed.

Regular supplements of L-carnitine, however, contribute to energy metabolism and improved neurotransmitter function in the brain in elderly patients.

As an antidote in valproic acid poisoning “[In the treatment of valproate toxicity] L-carnitine supplementation …is thought to provide benefit, particularly in patients with concomitant hyperammonemia, encephalopathy, and/or hepatotoxicity.”Further trials are warranted, as benefit is largely theoretical, rather than proven at this stage.

To improve symptoms in moderate asthmatics L-carnitine levels are lower in moderate persistent asthmatic children as compared to healthy control children. Asthmatic children who received L-carnitine supplementation for six months showed statistically significant improvement in their ‘asthma control testing’ and in their pulmonary function tests.

To improve fatigue resulting from ifosfamide cancer chemotherapy High doses of the chemotherapy agent ifosfamide, due to its potential nephrotoxicity, may cause urinary loss of carnitine. One study suggests, as it is essential for energy production by mitochondria, L-carnitine may have a role in reducing ifosfamide-associated fatigue.

In conclusion

We find Tonalin(conjugated linoleic acid{CLA}) to be safe, scientifically proven, effective nutritional supplement that contains no stimulants of any kind.  those that are greatly overweight should take caution when using. Phosphatidylserine may reduce the risk of dementia; PS supplementation promotes a desirable hormonal balance for athletes. PS is Generally Recognized As Safe

Supplements are a great way to keep our bones  and teeth strong. Our eyes sparkly and bright. our skin clear and beautiful. Our minds alert and active; and so much more.  We take vitamin C to chase away colds. Vitamin D to keep our bones strong and healthy. Once you begin to take supplements then you wonder “am I taking the right amount?” or “am  I taking  the right combination?’ Those were questions I asked myself.  And I found the answer!

More people than ever are turning to supplements as part of a healthier lifestyle.  About 65% in 2009 said they used supplements. And more physicians are also paying attention thanks to clinical and observational studies showing the effectiveness of supplements.

Many of my own friends and family take some sort of supplement every day;  wether it be a single capsule or a hand full of vitamins. I have been there and admit I thought they were working well. That is until I started taking/drinking Reliv shakes everyday.  Within that first 30 days, I noticed  that I wasn’t coughing in the mornings as I had for years. Also, I wasn’t constantly wiping at my watery eyes.  Other things I noticed were : I wasn’t tried all the time; my muscles stopped hurting, and I just felt healthier all around.

Best Experience

 The Best Experience I have ever had, was meeting Reliv, and finding out what it could do for me.  I never thought I could work from home to improve my finances and health ,and at the same time  help others do the same!
